The 25-year-old became a key player for AZ Alkmaar after making a switch from G…

Arsenal played with handbrake on – Wenger

Arsene Wenger lamented his Arsenal side playing within themselves during Sunday s 0-0 draw with Premier League leaders Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

The hosts were unable to break the deadlock and end Wenger s winless run in matches against Jose Mourinho.

Wenger was left frustrated by his side s toothless display as they struggled to muster clear-cut opportunities in the stalemate.

I believe that we played with the handbrake on at times. We were conscious of being hit on the counter-attack and it was important not to lose, he told Sky Sports.

We produced a performance that was requested. In the first half we played with the right intensity but we lacked the right decisions.

In the second half our intensity dropped and it was too comfortabl…

Demiroren takes over Turkish Federation

Former Besikas president Yildirim Demiroren has been confirmed as the new head of the Turkish Football Federation.

Demiroren, who replaces Mehmet Ali Aydinlar as the head of the TFF, was the overwhelming favourite to win the race for presidency, and did so with 221 votes out of a possible 253.

The 48-year-old, the former de facto head of the Turkish clubs union, told reporters after the win, I d like to thank everyone who voted for me. We re all in this together. We will steady the ship with your support.

His predecessor, Aydinlar, had proposed a motion to abolish a clause that made relegation compulsory for all Turkish teams found guilty of match-fixing.

That motion ultimately proved unsuccessful at the turn of the year, and Aydinlar stepped down at th…

Guardiola open to new Man City deal for ´amazing´ Sterling

Pep Guardiola is hopeful in-form forward Raheem Sterling can extend his stay at Manchester City.

England international Sterling has been in dazzling form for the Premier League leaders this season, with his haul of 13 goals across all competitions already his best for a single campaign.

His latest strike was a brilliant injury-time winner to sink Southampton 2-1 on Wednesday, having similarly seen off Huddersfield Town last weekend.

Sterling signed a five-year deal when he joined City from Liverpool in 2015 but the club are reported to be keen on offering him fresh terms due to his increasing importance to Guardiola s side – August links to Arsenal as a makeweight in a deal for Alexis Sanchez fading evermore quickly from view.

Allegri pleased with Juve display

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri believes only a goal was missing as he was left otherwise satisfied with his team s display in a 0-0 draw against Inter.

For the first time since August 2015, Juve failed to score at home in a Serie A game as they stayed third in the table.

But Allegri was pleased with what he saw from his team, saying all that was missing from their performance was a winning goal.

Running is not the most important thing in football but it definitely helps. It allows you to bring your technical ability to the fore, and that s what wins you games, he said, via the club s website.

We played very well – perhaps even better than I imagined. We restricted the team that s top of the league to very few chances indeed.

Oman 0-1 Germany: Fullkrug nets late to spare rusty visitors´ blushes in World Cup warm-up

Niclas Fullkrug came off the bench to spare Germany s blushes in their lone World Cup warm-up as they claimed a 1-0 friendly win over Oman in Muscat.

The Werder Bremen attacker replaced fellow debutant Youssoufa Moukoko at half-time and scored with 10 minutes to play in a lacklustre encounter at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.

Even with a pick-and-mix side that blended experienced faces with fresh blood, head coach Hansi Flick is likely to have some concerns a week out from his side s Qatar 2022 curtain raiser against Japan in Group E.

Despite a performance below the standards Die Nationalmannschaft are likely to set themselves, the former Bayern Munich boss will hope to have found clarity rather than confusion in their encounter with Branko Ivankovic s hosts.<…
